CelPlan Technologies and The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Renew Agreement for Radio-Frequency (RF)-based systems, standards and technologies courseware

The UWI LogoST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago (Oct. 5, 2014) – CelPlan Technologies, Inc. (CelPlan) and The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus (The UWI) have renewed an Academic Program Courseware License Agreement by which CelPlan provides training materials on radio communications and Radio-Frequency (RF)-based systems, standards and technologies to The UWI.

Additionally, CelPlan has provided UWI license-free use of CelPlannerTM, their flag-ship, industry-grade software for planning, designing and optimization of wireless telecommunication systems, including 4G systems. The training materials, together with software, have been integrated into a number of academic courses and student projects offered by the Communication Systems Group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DECE).  These, in turn, provide students in-demand, industry-ready, hands-on skills and experience in the rapidly advancing field of wireless communications engineering.

According to Dr. Kim I. Mallalieu, Leader of the Communication Systems Group, DECE: “This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to design and analyse new and emerging wireless communication networks using industry-grade software; and at the same time, to explore market modelling, realistic business cases and a variety of design tasks that are not typically covered in theoretical courses.”

Roy Richardson, Vice President of Business Development for CelPlan stated: “We are very pleased with the partnership established with The UWI through our Academic Program. It provides a great opportunity to share our 25+ years' of knowledge and expertise in radio frequency (RF) communication systems to the academic arena and in particular, the Caribbean Region. It is even more pleasing to see how Dr. Mallalieu and her staff have been able to integrate our materials into their curriculum.”

Following on the inaugural Caribbean edition of the “4G Technologies and Network Design Boot Camp” delivered in December  2013, at The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus, CelPlan will conduct an “LTE Network Design and Optimization Boot Camp” December 8th - 12th, 2014.  This 5-day Boot Camp is designed to give CEOs, CTOs, managers, engineers, and technical staff the practical knowledge and expertise to deploy and optimize LTE networks. Leonhard Korowajczuk, CEO/CTO of CelPlan, and author of several texts including “LTE, WiMAX and WLAN Network Design, Optimization and Performance Analysis,” (Wiley 2011) will be the instructor for this Boot Camp.  Topics include LTE Technology Overview; LTE capacity calculation; measurements; MIMO; network, services and traffic modelling; RF propagation models and calibration, predictions, resource optimization, traffic simulation and performance. The Boot Camp includes an interactive workshop and provides preparation for LTE certification, which is also included with the course. All industry personnel, academia and interested persons in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider region are welcome to register for the course.

About The UWI
Since its inception in 1948, The University of the West Indies (UWI) has evolved from a fledgling college in Jamaica with 33 students to a full-fledged, regional University with well over 40,000 students. Today, UWI is the largest, most longstanding higher education provider in the Commonwealth Caribbean, with four campuses in Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Open Campus. The UWI has faculty and students from more than 40 countries and collaborative links with 160 universities globally; it offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree options in Food & Agriculture, Engineering, Humanities & Education, Law, Medical Sciences, Science and Technology and Social Sciences. UWI’s seven priority focal areas are linked closely to the priorities identified by CARICOM and take into account such over-arching areas of concern to the region as environmental issues, health and wellness, gender equity and the critical importance of innovation.
